This solid oak carved chest was made in the Netherlands during the Renaissance period. It was made in the finest quality oak and high quality carving. The carvings are deep and meticulous. The four panels in the front have geometric circular carvings. The rest of the front is carved in a typical 17th century motif. This motif is also known as counted counted coins. It resembles coins when stacked half on each other. The Dutch Renaissance was the golden age for the Netherlands and many people once gained wealth, would showcase their prosperity. This chest is a maids chest and was given by the parents to their daughter when she went out to go and work for her first employer. In that matter, it resembles the nowadays suitcase. The chest has a small interior compartment. There is some wear on the top consistent with the age of the piece.
